FAQs

What is the difference between Yoga & Pilates?

Yoga is thousands of years old and has primarily spiritual goals. The word "Yoga" is sanskrit and is often translated to mean "union" or "connection". So everything that is done in Yoga is done with the goal of connecting with what is beyond the material experience and to be able to see beyond "Maya" or illusion. The different techniques used in Yoga are beneficial for the body and the mind because when the body and mind are in a nourished state, it is easier to connect. There are many, many styles of Yoga and many techniques contained with in them. However, traditional Yoga techniques incorporate various methods of breath, meditation, postures, philosophy, morals, values, nutrition and hygiene.

Pilates was created by a single man, Joseph Pilates, during WWI while confined on the Isle of Man. Acting as a physical therapist and orderly for his fellow inmates who were hospitalised, he developed a system that he called "Contrology". This assisted people to exercise without needing to move from their bed and formed the prototype for his later inventions.

Contrology intentionally incorporates and expands on martial arts, Yoga, Zen meditation, gymnastics and animal movements. His original inentions of a whole system of living has transformed into the Pilates we know today, which is purely physical. Pilates is defined by precision, control, alignment and breath. Healthy alignment is maintained, or worked towards, while moving very specifically with the assistance of the breath to build strength and fluidity. Equipment is often used to support these movements so that the body can not cheat - it likes to do that!

Equipment

Both Yoga and Pilates can be done without equipment, however, it is helpful to have a Yoga mat and/ or a Pilates mat (which is bit thicker than a Yoga mat), a pilates ball or cushion, 2 Yoga blocks or 2 large books, a Yoga strap/ scarf or belt and possibly a blanket.
